You Gotta Go there!

Hey, when is the last time you went to a National Park?  One near you? Or one far away?  You Gotta Go There!  We are SO lucky to have such a wonderful National park right in our own ‘back yard’ here in New England.  I just got back from being there for five days and it was just wonderful.  Of course it helps when the weather is as perfect as it was for us this time.  Perhaps one of my best visits there regarding the weather.  We had great clouds and blue sky with a dash of fog thrown in for good measure.
The ‘trick’ of course is to go early in the day.  Can you say 4am?  That’s what it took to get these two sunrises.

But, of course it’s not just about sunrises alone at Acadia.  One of my other favorite spots in the park is Jordan Pond.  It’s a great little pond with two mountains at the opposite end with rocks in the foreground. How easy is that for a great photo? in this case I took a photo of an old tree that had fallen into the edge.

Time for true confessions…..As I walk around Jordan Pond taking photos I have one thing on my mind…and that’s dining at the restaurant there so that I can have one of their signature desserts.  Ice cream sundae Popover.  I’m still working it off……

But really, You Gotto Go and enjoy our National Parks!

OK, back to the treadmill…..Bob Ring

For New Englanders: If you haven’t been to Acadia NP go!  For those from outside New England: Make the trip!  The diverse locations and subjects of this National Park are just fantastic.  From the rugged Maine coast to a small mountain for sunrises and sunsets to a sandy beach to a stand of birch trees you can’t go wrong. Oh, and I didn’t even mention the deer and all of the various birds that frequent this park.  Check it out!

CHASING GREAT LIGHT…

Samoset, Rockport, Maine, Harbor, New England, Coast

As a photographer I need to be cognizant of the ‘quality’ of light at all times. Geez, I’ll be driving my car and looking at scenes and thinking about how good or bad the ‘light’ is! On the mid-coast of Maine there are many opportunities for various types of light and therefore is a great location for photography. I went to Rockport, Maine’s harbor area in the afternoon before the sun got too low so that I could capture some scenes in ‘warm’ light. The dinghys, ropes and schooner was just a perfect location to explore. A little luck never hurts either as the schooner left about 30 minutes after I got there. The scene wouldn’t have been the same without that schooner (named Heron).

So, chase the light to get the best shots you can. Anyway, I’m off to chase some clouds in my scenes now! Good luck.

Going back…

It’s been a while since my last Blog! Way too long actually. I’ve been busy with photo workshops (www.nephotoworkshops.com) and my own landscape photography. I’d rather be busy than just sitting around though!

These are exciting times for a photographer as new cameras continue to be introduced that ‘raise the bar’ for image quality and size at reasonable prices. Software is right along beside those new cameras with exciting new techniques to enable great ‘standard’ style images but also to be able to create unique imagery. All fun. End of July we go to Lubec, Maine for another ‘BOLD Coast of Maine’ photo workshop. Arguably one of my favorites and I’m looking forward to be bringing along a new camera with me. How can one go wrong? Explore the Maine coast, photograph Puffins, go onto Campobello Island in Canada! How fun & diverse is that?!

Just came back form the Great North Woods of Maine (another top favorite workshop of mine) where we photographed moose up fairly close along with some great scenery. Mt. Katahdin located in Baxter State Park is one of my favorite mountains and one I just love photographing. If you’re into photography you should check it out. If you’re into hiking you should….check it out.

So, a key point here is in order for a photographer to get great images of their favorite locations they should be Going Back… and going back again! That’s how you get great images. The image here of Katahdin is arguably my personal most favorite one I have ever taken of that mountain. And, trust me I’ve been back many times!

This is now one of my favorite images that I’ve ever taken of Mt Katahdin in Millinocket, Maine.  Can’t add anything else!

Anyway, back to work!

I’m back from Martha’s Vineyard after a wonderful photo workshop in a fantastic location. Hard to beat MVI for photo opportunities especially at the beaches. Well, even around the towns too! There’s so much to see & do and all of it just makes me think: New England.
